Círculo de Arte e Recreio

Work produced during an artistic residency that took place between January and April 2012 in Guimarães, part of the project “Memórias Coletivas Singulares” curated by Luís Ribeiro, for Guimarães European Capital of Culture 2012.
 The site-specific interventions, designed for the headquarters of Convivio and Circulo de Arte e Recreio, were developed from the collection and analysis of material from the albums, minutes, reports and press files that make up the immense archive of these associations. Between scattered information and some material lost from the more than 50 years of Convívio and the more than 70 years of CAR’s activity, both interventions seek to present themselves as a testimony of this history and echo the atmosphere and dynamics of the space they occupy.

Círculo de Arte e Recreio 2012 (acrylic paint on wall) focuses mainly on the musical and theatrical events that took place at CAR, starting with its founding musical group Ritmo Louco. As a place constantly filled with music and activity, the intervention adopts a more playful structure, composed of these same rhythms. In dialogue and collaboration with the people who live and follow the life of the CAR, the main names of the projects and people who marked the history of this association were gathered and represented.
